Tips of the Trade

As the air gets crisp, it’s a sure sign the holidays are quickly approaching. For many, it’s when we start contemplating our holiday dĂ©cor. So, we asked our friends at Looney Lights to give us some tips for holiday lighting.

Start with a plan

Before buying and hanging lights, think about your home’s size and how much space you will be covering. It’s always best to buy extra! If you don’t buy enough, chances are when you go back, they’re either out of stock or overpriced.

Use the right equipment

Using the right equipment, like outdoor extension cords and power strips, can make all the difference in your safety and the efficiency of your decorating.

Timing is everything

Paying attention to the elements before climbing the ladder or roof is extremely important. Plan accordingly to work during bright, daytime hours.

Know your limits

Understand the risk of hanging your lights. “How hard is your house?” “How steep is the roof?” “Am I comfortable doing it?” Think through that process before getting out the ladder and realizing it isn’t for you.

More isn’t better

The volume of lights isn’t just about style preference, but a power issue as well. Having an excessive amount of lights will not only be strenuous on your power bill, but it also doesn’t guarantee that your home will look its best.

Roof Refresh in Fall

Fall is the perfect time to clean up your roof. A well-cared-for roof not only enhances your home’s curb appeal but also prevents costly repairs down the line. To keep your roof in peak condition, here are some simple yet effective maintenance tips to safeguard your home.

  • Clean off debris regularly.
  • Replace missing or damaged shingles.
  • Clean your gutters at least twice a year so water flows smoothly off your roof.
  • Trim nearby trees so less debris falls on the roof or clogs gutters.
  • Evaluate your home’s ventilation so condensation isn’t forming under shingles.
  • Avoid power-washing! This can loosen shingles and cause further damage.

Prep to Impress for Showings

Setting up your home for a slam dunk first impression can go a long way to acquiring the highest market value when selling your home. Next time you tidy up the house before a showing, focus on these simple steps for a sparkling first impression.

  • Clean windows inside and outside
  • Keep baskets in rooms to store daily clutter and showcase counters and floors
  • Remove or move furniture to make rooms look bigger
  • Make sure sinks, faucets, and mirrors are clean
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Shampoo carpets, rugs, and furniture for a fresh scent
  • Open curtains or blinds to warm up the space with natural light
  • Store pet bowls, toys, and beds in a container out of sight to limit odors
  • Turn on lamps in every room for an inviting atmosphere

These steps along with frequent cleaning will keep your house show-ready for a great first impression!

Guess the Realtor

Fall is the time for many photo-ops! What better way to celebrate a season of snap, cheese, and pose, than with a few realtor throwbacks? Can you guess these realtors? Hover over the image to see who it is.

Bootiful Curb Appeal

Vamping up your doorway is a welcoming treat for your Halloween guests. If skeletons, inflatables, or moving displays aren’t your thing, consider a subtler approach like placing mums, pumpkins, or LED lights on your porch or along the sidewalk. If you don’t have a lot of space, a festive wreath or door decoration is a simple way to add some fall flair. And while real cobwebs are so Halloween, it might be a good idea to tidy up the porch or front door to welcome your guests.

Have a spooktacular Halloween!

Question of the Month: Why should I buy a home in the fall?

While autumn whips in temperature swings and family activity chaos, fall is actually a great time to consider buying a home! Traditionally, spring and summer are more desirable to buy and sell, we think fall is one of the best times to buy real estate. With less competition on the market, you won’t be competing with as many offers. This off-season can grant a quick close. While the timeline to pack and move might not be as convenient, sellers are more motivated, serious, and open to negotiation, encouraging you with buy-downs and concessions.

First-time home buyers, take note of the amazing tax breaks. Any payments made prior to the closing of the loan are tax-deductible. This can make a difference in the amount you owe the government at the end of the year. Following along the lines of financial perks, you can also take advantage of end-of-year sales to outfit or upgrade your home. Improvements are endless, but you’ll probably want to upgrade or buy items to maintain your home. According to Consumer Reports, here is a calendar view that determines the best time to buy consumer goods at a discounted rate.

If you’re considering buying this fall, the entire Gresham Group team is here to provide a stress-free and seamless real estate buying experience.
